Remolino Adventure Works

About Us

Ray MolinaOver the last decade we've watched things in the canyons change and grow, as they inevitably will. We've also seen the rise of the "Wal-Marts" of the tour business in this area. While these outfits won't show up without a group of at least twelve or more, we're happy with the intimacy of a smaller group of people who want to ride at about the same level—be it dirt road cruising or serious single-track.

The big companies have adopted the itinerary that we originated and stick to it. The difference with us is that none of our trips are ever the same. We prefer to do "variations on the theme." That is, you'll see the same sights the bigger tours do, and some that they don't. With us there's always the opportunity to do a bit more—that extra mile or interesting side road, options for extra camping nights, or multi-day, middle-of-nowhere, canyon-hopping adventures. In other words, making sure your experience is unique to your interests and riding abilities is what sets us apart.

Your Guide

Ray "El Remolino" Molina has specialized in mountain biking the Copper Canyon region since 1989, when he was guided there by a geologist friend and instantly fell in love with the area and its trails. It didn't take long before Ray formed his own tour company—Remolino Adventure Works. From the beginning, Ray has been traveling, mountain biking, exploring, hiking, kayaking and building friendships throughout the canyons. He was one of the very first mountain bikers in the area and continues to seek out new rider-friendly trails as well as the most challenging single-track. Think of him not as a guide who can ride a bike, but as a mountain biker who guides!

If there were one word to describe Ray (and there are many!) it would have to be "resourceful." Aside from being an accomplished mountain biker, Ray speaks fluent Spanish and some Raramuri (the Tarahumara language). He can also fix just about anything that can happen to a vehicle—be it bicycle or van—in the wild outback of Mexico. But don't just take our word for it, check out the article "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" in Bike Magazine's September 1996 issue. Ray was also asked by the Travel Channel to guide the "Biking Copper Canyon" episode of Phil Koeghan's Adventure Crazy. During the show, Phil and the directors dubbed him "Outrageous Ray," which gives one a better idea of how different a trip with him can be.
